ALEXSAN KOPANO EDUCATIONAL TRUST
CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT

For The Year Ended 31 March 2006

  • Alexsan Youth Desk - Prince Mafora

Sports and recreation

The daily Little Champs programme runs from 9 in the morning till 12 for pre-school children.  Other activities for older children take place from 2.00pm until 4:30 pm in the afternoon.

The Little Champs programme serves three pre-primary schools a day and they coach 15-20 little people per class or session on a daily basis.  20 pre-primary schools are affiliated to the programme and they total up to 500 kids.  The programme trains in gross motor skills, eye-hand co-ordination, eye foot co-ordination, control, balance, speed and agility.

The project has also embarked on a numeracy and literacy programme and this project was launched on the 30th September 2005 with the involvement of the Sports Foundation, Discovery and Leureus South Africa

Among other things, this programme covers: ubuntu, nutrition, zoo trips, cinema trips and road shows in different provinces to raise awareness about children’s health. These road shows/programmes are run in conjunction with Rama.

In the afternoon, basic computer skills are carried out in the library and for the older children sports and recreation covers table tennis, morabaraba and draughts.

Christmas Carols

The Christmas Carols happen every year in the first week of December.  It caters mostly for the under privileged children around Alexandra.  This is actually their Christmas celebration.  Music and carols are provided by the Alexandra Adult Choir that entertains the children with famous Christmas songs. At the end of the day we give them some goodies to enjoy.  The youth take turns to play the role of Father Christmas every year and help in the co-ordination of the event.

Career Guidance and Information

For career guidance and counseling we are able to give youth information on business, bursaries, education, learnerships and training.

We are utilizing the UNESCO virtual reality programme with youth who want to understand the difference between looking for a job and/or starting up their own business.

We also give them the opportunity to surf the net if the information required needs to be checked through the Internet, like Umsombomvu, DTI, Cipro, Career Junction etc

Ballet Dancing

The ballet dance classes are still on and going strong with the increase in the number of participants. Most participants are pre-school children and primary school children from Alexandra.

The dance programme starts from 1 pm to 4 pm in the afternoons from Monday to Thursday for primary school children and from 1pm to 2pm in the afternoon for pre-school kids on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Acknowledgements

We would like to thank Toyota for their assistance in project work and the Annual Christmas Carols, Little Champs for assisting with both training and funding of the Little Champs Programme and UNESCO for enabling South Africa to produce the virtual reality employment programme.
