Sports and recreation
The daily Little Champs programme runs from 9 in the
morning till 12 for pre-school children. Other
activities for older children take place from 2.00pm
until 4:30 pm in the afternoon.
The Little Champs programme serves three pre-primary
schools a day and they coach 15-20 little people per
class or session on a daily basis. 23 pre-primary
schools are affiliated to the programme and they
total up to 500 kids. The programme trains in gross
motor skills, eye-hand co-ordination, eye foot
co-ordination, control, balance, speed and agility.
The project has also embarked on a numeracy and
literacy programme and this project was launched on
the 30th September 2005 with the involvement of the
Leureus Sports Foundation.
Christmas Carols
The Christmas Carols happen every year in the first
week of December. It caters for the under privileged
children around Alexandra. Music and carols are
provided by the Alexandra Adult Choir that
entertains the children with famous Christmas songs.
At the end of the day we give them some sweets to
enjoy. The youth take turns to play the role of
Father Christmas every year and help in the
co-ordination of the event. This past year we linked
the carols to the 20th Anniversary Celebration.
Saturday Classes
The library still runs its Saturday classes and we
currently have two teachers. One who teaches Biology
and the other who teaches Maths and Science. The
project was given an educational torso showing the
different parts of the body, a television and DVD
player to support the teachers and a DVD on the
environment.
Educational Videos
The Educational Videos are still popular with the
Matric students and Adult Education students. We can
cater for individuals and groups of about 25 to 30
people.
Internet Café and Supplementary Computer Room
The internet café with six stations and a server has
been accommodating up to 50 people a day. The
internet connection also supports the advanced class
in the computer training studio when they do
Internet and E-mail. We are now looking to upgrade
these computers that have served us well for the
past five years.
The supplementary computer room is used as a
practice room for students who have completed the
computer training course to enable them to both keep
their skills up to date and to do adhoc work. In the
afternoons the primary school children are taught
the basics of computers. These four computers also
need to be upgraded during the 2007-2008 year.
Acknowledgements
We would like to thank Toyota for supporting the
project work in the library and the annual Christmas
Carols; Little Champs for assisting with both
training and funding of the Little Champs Programme
and our teachers and staff who give of their time to
uplift others.
