Little Champs by
Siphiwe Kubheka
- Little Champs aim
is to bring out champions in every boy and girl
between the age of 3 to 6 yrs old by developing
their motor skills in a fun, exciting and non
competitive environment. Our coaching focuses on
the following: speed, balance, agility,
eye-hand/eye foot coordination and spatial
awareness.
- Literacy and
Numeracy programme: The program focuses on
identification of letters, numbers and
pronunciation of letters or alphabets
- We have 24 creches
that are affiliated to Little Champs this year and
plus minus 800 kids that we coach on monthly
basis.
- There was an
educational outing in late 2007 where 400 Little
Champs had an opportunity to go to the zoo to
learn about the different animals and their
behaviour. The trip was made possible by
Aristocrat Technologies and the children and
teachers found the trip very informative
especially as they could see the animals for real
and not just in books.
Christmas Play
and Carols
This year through the
support given by Aristocrat Technologies we were
able to add a Christmas Play plus hot dogs and juice
to the Annual Christmas Carols that take place every
year in the first week of December. It caters for
the under privileged children around Alexandra. The
play was performed by the Sibikwa students, the
catering by our youth, music and carols were
provided by the Alexandra Adult Choir and Father
Christmas gave out sweets at the end of the event.
The youth take turns to play the role of Father
Christmas every year and help in the co-ordination
of the event.
Saturday Classes
The library during
this period still ran its Saturday classes and we
currently have two teachers. One who teaches
Biology and the other who teaches Maths and
Science. The project was given a television and DVD
player to support the teachers and a DVD on the
environment.
Educational
Videos
The Educational
Videos are still popular with the Matric students
and Adult Education students. We cater for
individuals and groups of 25 to 30 people.
Internet Café and
Supplementary Computer Room
The internet café has
six stations and a server and has been accommodating
up to 30 people a day. The internet connection also
supports the advanced class in the computer training
studio when they do Internet and E-mail and links
some of our offices to the internet. Sasol assisted
us again in replacing the original computers that
had served us well for the past five years, with new
ones.
In addition Sasol
upgraded four computers in the supplementary
computer room. Where the internet café is used to
access information only, this room is used as a
practice room for students who have completed the
computer training course to enable them to keep
their skills up to date and to do adhoc work. In
the afternoons the primary school children are also
taught the basics of computers.
Approximately 80 to
100 people a day visit the library. During the
course of this period we have received books from
the 2007 book selection.
Acknowledgements
We would like to
thank Aristocrat Technologies and Sasol for their
support in this section over this past year; Little
Champs for assisting with both training and funding
of the Little Champs Programme and our teachers and
staff who give of their time to uplift others.
