We are in our twelfth
year of operation and continue to be a support
service to the community of Alexandra. Life Line
Alexandra has touched the lives of the community of
Alexandra and its neighbouring areas by having a
safety net on one’s door step where people can just
come and speak to a counsellor in a warm and
confidential place using the preferred language of
the client.
Most of our
counselors in our outreach centres speak at least
four African languages and that helps in managing a
counseling session where people feel heard,
understood and above all not judged for whatever
they are going through in their lives.
Issues that we cover
include family relations, rape, loss, physical
abuse, peer pressure, behavioural problems, drug
abuse, substance abuse, learning problems, domestic
violence, suicide and stress.
During the course of
this past year we had 1948 interventions. 1102
people came to the office and 846 interventions came
through our outreach projects:
- Ithute Primary
School 221
- Ekukhanyisweni
Primary School 225
- Highlands North
Boys 223
- Bovet
Primary 31
- Thusong Youth
Centre 35
- Dr Knak
Primary 111
The AlexFM counseling
programmes have run well and enable us to both
outreach into the community and encourage those to
visit the centre in times of crisis.
We also supported the
foreign nationals who were housed at Alexandra and
Bramley Police stations by doing face to face
counseling, trauma debriefing and coordinating food,
clothes and blankets. I would like to thank all
those in the team who assisted and participated at
this time.
We have also
networked and partnered with other organisations
during the course of the year. Meetings with these
organisations include Partnership Against Aids,
Alexandra Service Providers, Ann Lansky Nursing,
Child Abandonment Workshop and the Greater Alexandra
Development Forum Social Cluster.
Acknowledgements
We would like to
thank our donors First Rand Foundation, Anglo
American Chairman’s Fund and the Lottery for their
kind contributions in assisting us to carry out our
work.
I would like to thank
my fellow staff member Mrs. Mavis Rathogwa and our
volunteer counsellors Mama Christine Usiba and Sesi
Evelyn Nkwana for the valuable work they are doing
in the community.
