CHILD AND LIBRARY PROJECTS

The work of the library was somewhat hindered during this past year when renovations to the project side of the library was seriously inhibited by delayed and unprofessional work for the duration of the year. We were unable to access our children’s library and also the Saturday classes were put on hold. This situation was only rectified by City of Johannesburg at the end of this reporting period.

Nonetheless the balance of the library had 100 to 120 visitors a day.

Little Champs by Siphiwe Kubheka

  • Little Champs aim is to bring out champions in every boy and girl between the age of 3 to 6 yrs old by developing their motor skills in a fun, exciting and non competitive environment. Our coaching focuses on the following: speed, balance, agility, eye-hand/eye foot coordination and spatial awareness.
  • Literacy and Numeracy programme: The program focuses on identification of letters, numbers and pronunciation of letters or alphabets
  • We have 30 crèches that are affiliated to Little Champs this year and plus minus 1000 kids that we coach on monthly basis.

Woman’s Day Event

This was the first time is we had hosted a Women’s Day Event kindly sponsored by Aristocrat Technologies. The Library staff and Life Line staff came together and asked the community to nominate our unsung heroines. Publicity was given to the event by ALXFM Radio and on the day, in between the speeches and awards, the staff of ALMFM put on a most festive display of local talent much appreciated by the women participants. There were 14 finalists that all received certificates and the top four received prizes.

Christmas Play and Carols

This year through the support given by Aristocrat Technologies we were again able to add a Christmas Play plus hot dogs and juice to the Annual Christmas Carols that take place every year in the first week of December.

It caters for the under privileged children around Alexandra. The play was performed by the Victory Sonqoba students, the catering by our youth, music and carols were provided by the Alexandra Adult Choir and Father Christmas gave out sweets at the end of the event. The youth take turns to play the role of Father Christmas every year and help in the co-ordination of the event.

Educational Videos

The Educational Videos are still available to the Matric students and Adult Education students.

Internet Café and Supplementary Computer Room

The internet café has six stations and a server and has been accommodating up to 30 people a day. The internet connection also supports the advanced class in the computer training studio when they do Internet and E-mail. It also links some of our offices to the internet.

Four computers are available in the supplementary computer room. Where the internet café is used to access information only, this room is used as a practice room for students who have completed the computer training course to enable them to keep their skills up to date and to do adhoc work. In the afternoons the primary school children are also taught the basics of computers.

Acknowledgements

We would like to thank Aristocrat Technologies for their support in this section over this past year; Little Champs for assisting with both training and funding of the Little Champs Programme and our teachers and staff who give of their time to uplift others.
