ALEXSAN/LIFE LINE COUNSELLING CENTRE – IRIS MALIBOHO

Back to contents

We are in our fourteenth year of operation and continue to be a support service to the community of Alexandra. Life Line Alexandra has touched the lives of the community and its neighbouring areas by having a safety net on one’s door step where people can just come and speak to a counsellor in a warm and confidential place using the preferred language of the client.

Most of our counselors in our outreach centres speak at least four African languages and that helps in managing a counseling session where people feel heard, understood and above all not judged for whatever they are going through in their lives.

Issues that we cover include family relations, rape, loss, physical abuse, peer pressure, behavioral problems, drug abuse and substance abuse, learning problems, domestic violence, suicide and stress.

During the course of this past year we had 4877 interventions. 4513 people were face to face and 377 were telephonic.

Counselling

We have nine counselors who are active in offering a counselling service Monday to Saturdays from 9h00 to 4h30 week days. On Saturdays the centre is open between 9h00 and 1h00. We have a group of counsellors who have dedicated their Saturdays fortnightly to allow support counselling with their clients and also allow their schedule to deal with drop-ins and per appointment clients.

We train our counsellors in Johannesburg Centre and Alexandra. We have ten counsellors at present and nine of them are fully managing their counselling shifts.

School Projects

One of our staff members visits three Primary Schools once a week to counsel. She meets a lot of challenging cases. She also gets to meet the parents of those learners who need family intervention.

At the fourth primary school we supported learners and educators who were counseled because a learner was killed by a car next to the school. This was a large learning experience for us with nine counselors being on site with half the school in tears. We did what we could and our support was visible.

Partnerships

Life Line is part of the Alexandra Service Providers Forum and actively involved in the Social Cluster, Greater Alexandra Development Forum and Greater Alexandra Partnership Against Aids.

Acknowledgements

From our side we would like to thank the Anglo American Chairman’s Fund who have assisted with the day to day running costs of the centre and Life Line for finding the balance of the funding needed.

We would also like to thank the staff for the very valuable work they are doing in the community.

OUR OVERALL THANKS

We would like to thank our donors, community, staff and Trustees and all those who contributed to the organization over this reporting period. Thank you for being a part of our family and for the role you have played over this past year.
